Science with and for Society


The aim of this programme is to build effective cooperation between science and society, to recruit new talent for science and to pair scientific excellence with social awareness and responsibility.


This programme is not included in the three main Horizon 2020 pillars.



The ‘Science with and for Society’ programme will be instrumental in addressing the European societal challenges tackled by Horizon 2020, building capacities and developing innovative ways of connecting science to society.It will make science more attractive (notably to young people), increase society's appetite for innovation, and open up further research and innovation activities.

For 2014 and 2015, calls will focus on the following thematics :

  • Making science education and careers attractive for young people (SEAC);
  • Promoting gender equality in research and innovation (GERI);
  • Integrating society in science and innovation(ISSI);
  • Developing governance for the advancement of responsible research and innovation (GARRI);


Inside the "Science with and for Society" programme has an important role the inclusive approach called " Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI)" that encourages creativity and innovation in European societies.


Budget:  €421 million
