Through the Framework Programme, the European Commission funds several projects that enable European researchers to access to scientific and technology research activities in different areas of the world. (

Mexico falls within the Contact Areas that APRE established through this particular type of project.

The European Union (EU) and Mexico have a long history of bilateral relations that have led to remarkable results and achievements in recent years. The 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the EU and Mexico was celebrated in 2010.

Mexico intensified its efforts for a greater involvement in the European Research activities in the field of Science and Technology.  With the S&T Cooperation Agreement, signed in the Country Strategic Plan (CSP) 2002-2006 with the European Union, the CONACyT (the Mexican National Council for Science and Technology) co-finances an international cooperation programme in the area of Science and technology (S&T).
The strategic areas identified by Mexico are:

  • ICT
  • biotechnologies
  • materials and processes
  • urban and rural infrastructures

The European Commission has funded two types of projects to support Scientific and Technology Cooperation between Europe and Mexico. The first bilateral cooperation project is UEMEXCyT (Bureau for European and Mexican Science and Technology Cooperation) ( which aims at stimulating participation of Mexican researchers in the EU research programmes.

The second project is ACCESS2mEXCYT ( which aims at informing European researchers mainly on research opportunities in Mexico. If you are a European researcher and wish to learn about research opportunities in Mexico, you may access the following link: to display currently available programmes and research thematic areas of personal interest.

More information about research opportunities in Mexico and other countries are available downloading the periodic newsletter of the Access4EU projects.
In any case, because of APRE’s direct role in the project you may contact us (see link at the bottom of the page) for tips and further advice on how to benefit from these funding opportunities.
