What is the European Research Council (ERC) ?

The ERC is an independent Scientific Council made up of scientists, engineers and scholars of the highest repute and expertise establishes the overall scientific strategy and has full authority over decisions on the type of research to be funded. ERC is composed by a Scientific Board and an Executive Agency (ERCEA).

Objectives:

By 2020, the ERC therefore shall aim to demonstrate:

1) that the best researchers are participating in the ERC’s competitions, that ERC funding has led directly to scientific publications of the highest quality;

2) that ERC funding has led directly to o the commercialisation and application of innovative technologies and ideas;

3) that the ERC has contributed significantly to making Europe a more attractive environment for the world’s best scientists;

4) that ERC shall aim at a substantial increase in the number of excellent researchers from outside Europe whom it funds and specific improvements in institutional practices and national policies to support top researchers.

Funding Schemes:

  1. Starting Grants (StG): For researchers of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD (or equivalent degree) and scientific track record showing great promise
  2. Consolidator Grants (CoG): For researchers of any nationality with over 7 and up to 12 years of experience since completion of PhD (or equivalent degree) and scientific track record showing great promise
  3. Advanced Grants (AdG): ERC Advanced Grants allow exceptional established research leaders of any nationality and any age to pursue ground-breaking, high-risk projects that open new directions in their respective research fields or other domains.
  4. Synergy Grants (SyG): Pilot scheme launched for the last FP7 calls, for small groups of excellent researchers (From 2 to 4 researchers). It will not be launched for the first ERC-Horizon 2020 Work Programme.
  5. Proof of Concept (PoC): It helps to bridge the gap between the research and the earliest stage of a marketable innovation.
